Our Task
In this project, we were told to research an organism that is in danger of becoming extinct in the future. We chose the Scotts Valley Polygonum located only a couple hours away. We made an action plan to try to restore the population of the plant by emailing the CA director of State Parks to see what she could do to help us restore the plant near our hometown.
CONCEPTS
Ecology- Field of study that regards the relations of organisms and their surroundings
Trophic Level- The different levels of consumers ranking from lower to higher on the food chain
Abiotic- Something that does not derive from living things
Biotic- Something that comes from living things
Carrying Capacity- The number of organisms that a place can hold
Biome- A large community that makes up a certain habitat. Ex.- Desert or Forest
Autotroph- An organism that produces for an environment
Heterotroph- A consumer
10% Rule- Only 10% of energy is transferred to the next level on an ecological pyramid
Popuation- The amount of a certain thing in an area

REFLECTION
Over the course of this project, I learned a lot through our group and other groups on making a change in our community. This project had a lot of components to it that taught me a lot. I learned about all the plants and trees that I should respect around us. There are many plants in our area that must be protected because of their low populations. The toughest part of this project was not getting a response or action taken by the director of state parks. The peak of this project was just learning about our ecosystem around us. In the end, I am happy with how this project played out.
