Our Task
Our task for this project was to find out the physics concepts for the sport that we had chosen to improve the performance of the different sports teams at San Marin. We began by brainstorming ideas of sports that we could possibly research and compute the physics of. These sports were football, golf, tennis, crosscountry, and many other sports. In the end, we ended up choosing baseball as our sport. We found the angle and speed at which the bat and ball traveled and the estimated distance it would travel.
Physics Concepts Velocity: We used velocity to show the change in distance over the change of time. The equation to find the velocity is v= d/t. You measure the velocity in m/s or meters per second. Our velocity was about 30.4 m/s.
Vertical Distance: We used the vertical distance to find how high the ball traveled in the air. The equation to find vertical distance is Dvert= 1/2at^2.Our vertical distance was approximately 4.5 meters off the ground.
Horizontal Distance:We used horizontal distance to find how far from home plate the baseball traveled. To find this we measured the distance from home plate to where the ball landed which averaged a distance of about 60 meters.
Force: We used force to find out how much force was exerted on the ball when hit with the bat. To find the force the equation that we used was mv=Ft. We got a force of 1100 lbs of force was put on the ball.
Reflection
In this project there were many elements that i learned and enjoyed. I learned a lot about the equations that we use and how to solve them to find the numbers that we found. That was the most important and prevelant thing that i learned while working on this project. I enjoyed many aspects of this project also. I enjoyed the sports piece and learning new things about sports. Also, I enjoyed the fact that we were able to be outside of the classroom while working on the project. If I could do one thing better it would be to manage our time wisely because I felt like we lacked that at some points. Another thing was at one point we didn't know what to do next and we couldn't decide whether to go get the film for hitting or do the voice over. This was a small lapse in communication and time management.
